On the gayness of Dumbledore

from the NYTimes book review

Have you seen this? I think it's an interesting perspective on the whole "outing" of Dumbledore.

I hadn't seen this yet. I subscribe to this feed, but haven't checked it out recently. I actually agree with it on some levels, to tell you the truth.

One of the things that creates an HP obsession is backstory, and a lust for all the backstory you can possibly glean from small bits of information. JKR knows more about her characters than we can ever possibly imagine. There are things she probably wanted to include in the books, but just couldn't work it in (the story of Dean Thomas, for example). Perhaps Dumbledore being gay is one of those things. Did she cheekily allude to it? Eh... maybe, but probably not. It's a part of Dumbledore, and doesn't seem to enhance the story at all. So she probably through it out.

Does it belong in an annotated version of encyclopedia? YES!

What are your thoughts?

I don't even know what the story of Dean Thomas is. I'm definitely not a Potter scholar!

I think she probably thought about it a lot, but there was no need to put it in the books because that's not what his character was about. Apparently, a lot of people have suspected that all along.

I think it's great though from a sociological point of view. I think it might help young people learn tolerance and about diversity.

That is, if they even care. It seems like it's mostly adults that have something to say about it. I suspect no one has asked any children.

LOL I don't think anyone knows it- but she's always alluded to it in interviews, so I know it's there!

You're right- I wonder if anyone has asked any children? To agree with what you said, perhaps she's making a statement by not putting it in the books... you know, it's just a part of who he is, but not relevant to how he mentors Harry, which is his chief role in the series.
